Sony Cybershot DSC-W55 Shutter problem?

My daughter has a problem with the shutter on her Cybershot.
The lens does not extend fully and if she tries to zoom she gets a beeping noise and a shut off warning. As a result the images are not in focus.
You can hear the lens struggling to open so I guess that it is catching on itself.
The camera is used occasionally, kept clean in a case and as far as we know has not had any spillage on it. In fact the camera looks new.
Any ides as to how we can free up the lens and if not is a repair cost effective?
We live in the UK.
The battery is not the problem and this was my first thought. I can also see that the camera was never dropped and my daughter confirms this (she is 32 so is careful). Thank you for the input though.

It seems that the camera has depleted batteries or was dropped at one time when it was turned on and the lens extended. Now the mechanism that distends and retracts the lens is damaged. Only a professional repair shop can remedy your daughters camera problem

In the States, Sony has a help line we can call 800.222.SONY. See if you can find such a service in the UK. A simple "reset" may solve your daughters problem.
