is the d3000 worth the extra $100 ?

It is worth,better autofocus detection,but do remember,it doesn't have a autofocus motor.I will suggest olympus e620 or pentax k-x.

After all this time I am still surprised how people misunderstand the way the entry level Nikon DSLR's auto-focus. They use the new, ultra fast focusing AF-S lenses (as well as any of the used AF-I lenses). At this time, here are as many AF-S Nikon lenses as there are lenses that Olympus and Sony have for their new DSLR's.

Between the two, it may be worth the extra $100 for the D3000, but really you need to check for yourself. Visit a camera store and hold both in your hands ... see which feel the best to you. Here is a link that compares the two and I don't see much difference. However the D3000 does have extensive in-camera retouching including raw development and straightening if that is important

You may want to just spend the money you save to buy a couple of 2 gb memory cards.

If you are going to with on of the 2 you listed, then I would go with the newer Nikon D3000. The other poster, "inspire" has a very good point that the Pentax K-x is worth checking out.

Here are the cameras with their estimated prices:

Nikon D3000 10MP DSLR Digital Camera with 18-55mm VR Lens - $449
Pentax K-x 12MP DSLR with 18-55mm Zoom (has HD Video also) - $550

Below, I included a link to a web page that has a side by side listing of the 2 above cameras and it has links to reviews of the cameras that included sample photos. Also, some links to some photo dealers.

Hope this helps.
