I am wanting to get a new lens for my Canon Rebel XS. I want the Canon 18-200mm but I would prefer the Sigma 18-200mm for the price. Is the Sigma worth the $300-400, or should I just pay 200 extra for the Canon Brand. Thanks!
Go with canon
Answer by Jack on 05 Jan 2010 03:18:22Optically, you probably wouldn't ever tell the difference. Both are IS lenses - Canon's may perform slightly better. The Canon is one half-stop faster at the telephoto end and it might, just might, make a difference in action photography.
So, the Canon is the better of the two - but I'd be very tempted to go for the Sigma and put the saved money into a tripod or flash or something if you're trying to build your kit.
Canon makes great lenses and I have owned some Sigma lenses through the years and they have performed very well for me.
Below are some links that may be of interest, maybe you can find reviews on these lenses. Better yet, I would go to photo.net and in the discussion forums you can go to the Canon user area and get some feedback. Also, below is B&H Photo and Adorama, sellers that have customer reviews of many items, and of course you can read customer at amazon.com.
Hope this helps.
